Fourth grade is a year of tremendous growth in the area of academic independence. Although students are still learning to read, they are now placing a greater emphasis on reading to learn. This change is necessary in order for students to be able to better investigate the world and to be able to investigate questions they formulate themselves.

Higher level thinking and problem solving are emphasized in order to stretch student thinking and prepare them for an increasingly complex world. Students learn the skills related to public speaking through oral book reports, holiday presentations and state projects.

A highlight for many students is the emphasis placed on learning about other cultures and traditions related to specific countries. Prior to the Christmas holiday, students are each required to research a specific country's Christmas traditions, prepare a written and oral presentation and bring in a traditional cookie or dessert.

Beginning in fourth grade, students are divided into two mathematics classes in order to provide more individualized attention. Class size for math is generally limited to fifteen students from fourth through eighth grade.
